Hey laydeez
Dec. 23rd, 2006 11:37 pmIn half an hour I'll officially be 34. Still not sure how I feel about this.
However, I spent tonight as one should spend an almost-birthday: with two of my oldest friends. We were ten-year-old weirdos together, and then we were teenage weirdos, and then came the great Weirdo Diaspora when I left for England and they went on to Amherst and Bates, to major in journalism and Chinese studies, respectively.
One of us is a professional belly dancer and personal trainer, married to her high-school boyfriend and thinking about having children soon.
One of us is a kickass radio producer at fuckin' NPR! Public radio was her lifelong love and now she's in it.
One of us is still trying to make something of herself, but she'll get there one of these days.
Sometimes I look at us and I think: Hot damn, girls, check out us! If your high school self saw you now, she wouldn't be disappointed. Instead she might be like, "Hmmm, I could deal with growing up to be you."
