Last night's recital went OK-- the first half was kinda patchy; second half much more relaxed and fun.
Today, inspired by this post of
laughingmagpie's, I went to the viewing for the Angels costume auction at Bonham's. It turned out to be METRIC TONNES OF FUN.
So I got there, and some of the staff were trying on various costumes, rehearsing for a fashion parade at tomorrow's sale. There was a lot of giggling, especially at these two from Only Fools And Horses. There were a few prominently displayed glass cases containing things like Obi-Wan Kenobi's cloak and Tom Baker's frock coat (which I got to stroke while one of the "models" was trying it on. He said it was very comfortable to wear.)
Just behind the happy staffers was.... yes..... THE DOCTOR WHO RAIL. I went over and unashamedly petted Patrick Troughton's, Jon Pertwee's, Peter Davison's and Sylvester McCoy's outfits. They also had some other characters' costumes: the Doctor Who things are lots 9 to 18 on the main sale site, if you want to look. As for me, I dearly missed the company of
pvcdiva, whom I met at just such an event round about the turn of the millennium. She would not only have appreciated everything a thousand times more, she would have instantly become friends with everyone there by evening's end: such is the nature of the Diva.
I headed upstairs to where the less-valuable items hung on rails around the room. A friendly fellow named Adrian helped me try some things on: a green velvet tailcoat, a Catherine Zeta Jones-worn frock coat and one worn by Peter O'Toole, and some distressed eighteenth century stuff from Plunkett and Macleane. I oohed and aaahed my way around the room, where Peter Sellers's, Diana Rigg's and Ava Gardner's costumes hung next to Madonna's and the Spice Girls'. I tried on Daniel Day Lewis's leather jacket from Last of the Mohicans (stinkbomb of a movie, but nice jacket!)
Finally I headed out. "You've been here ages!" said the lady on the desk. 2 hours to see over 300 costumes, though: I think I did rather well.
I hope to get to the sale tomorrow, if only for blogging purposes. We'll see what happens.
