Upsight

yes! YES! I have it!

I've more or less decided how I want the Queen and her Ladies to appear (in The Magic Flute), but I was stuck on ideas for the Temple of Wisdom - which was a problem, because we spend most of the opera there.

I had thought about making the Temple guys sort of like Buddhist monks, or sort of like Lucas's Jedi, or sort of like Gandhi. But this morning, after getting far too little sleep because I'd stayed up too late reading Neal Stephenson's Anathem, I had an IDEA.

If you've read Anathem, you probably already know what I'm about to say.

The mathic world is going to be a major inspiration for the Temple of Wisdom. It's not an exact parallel, obviously, but it's close. For reasons of stage modesty, they'll have to wear something under their bolts, but I think we can preserve the basic bolt/chord/sphere design, along with its geometrical symbolism.

Finally, finally I have it. This is going to rock.

Now, has anyone got any clue how to build a stage version of a huge observatory-type telescope? Or an armillary sphere? I think I'm going to need both...

You know, after your announcement yesterday, my fella put on the Morse episode The Masonic Mysteries which revolves around TMF and I kept giggling to myself.

Hey there! For the Anathem release party I commissioned a clothing designer friend of mine to design bolt wrappings for the singers and shovel fighters. She and I (mostly she) worked out several methods which you are welcome to use--and none of them *require* modesty-enhancing undergarments, or even pins--or even the chord, actually. You can see them without the chords here: http://monastic.org/anathem/bolt.html, and also in many pictures of the event itself. I'm sure that Domini would be pleased to have her designs used as well.

That looks fantastic! Thank you for directing me there. When my plans are more together I'll certainly contact your friend and ask about using the designs, crediting her in the program, etc.

That must have been quite a party!

Hi again, uke! I can't seem to find any contact info on Domini's site, and I'd love to be able to ask her a couple of questions about what type of fabric she used for those bolts, and what length.

May I ask you please to pass my email address on to her? it's lizamezzo AT mac DOT com.

I've added you as a friend, too. Hope that's OK with you?

I can answer those questions! I'll pass your address to her anyway if you like of course. The fabric is a thin polyester-type of thing, slightly stretchy. For a regular-sized person it's about three yards (maybe a bit less). The fabric is split down the center (lengthwise) for all but about 2 feet or so.

And yes, of course.
