We are black and white, and we dance all night down at the Hop
All of a sudden, I have cats.
A few visits to the nearby Catcuddles Sanctuary have led to the arrival of Milo and Mystery. It was Mystery who first captured my heart, and Milo was an afterthought-cat, but it turns out that they love each other, and I love both of them, so that's all right then.
Mystery (tuxedo, female, 18 months) is a Hiding Cat. When they arrived this morning she immediately dove behind the desk and didn't come out until nearly twelve hours later. But even in hiding, when you pet her she purrs and doesn't flinch. She needs to know that she's safe, I think, before she can feel confident. Throughout the evening, she has become more sociable; I hope the trend continues.
Milo (black-and-white, male, 6 months) is a Glad To See You Cat, and even a bit of a Pick-Up Cat. He also excels in the vital cat skills of exploring and playing. His black markings are known as a "mask and mantle," which basically means he goes around in a cowl and cape like a proper superhero. He has a loud, pulsating purr, which makes a pleasing duet with Mystery's softer continuous drone. He adores food and, left to his own devices, will happily EAT ALL THE THINGS. The hapless owner must see to it that Mystery gets SOME OF THE THINGS.
I can't say enough good things about Catcuddles. Evina and her army of volunteers make sure all their charges are well socialised, and when expensive vet care is required, they unquestioningly have it done. It was Evina who suggested Milo as a companion for Mystery, and she was completely right about that. They're as ripe a pair of conspirators as ever were.
On the evening of their second day here, I let them out of the study for a bit of exploration, and this happened. Thank the gods for Ask Metafilter and supportive friends. They're both recovered now, and I'm about ready to let them out again.
I haven't been able to take good pictures yet, but I've been arsing around with Photobooth. The LED flash makes their white areas glow eerily, which is always a bonus.

See Icon for a kitten picture of her.

Milo looks a bit like my dear departed Mr. Whiskers. I love the white whiskers on the black face, especially the ones above the eyes. We used to call those his eyestalks.

I love them! Boon companions to a lady of wit and style.

Things are certainly never boring with cats around...

I hid under the kitchen cupboards (the space between the cupboard and the floor), so they had to take the board off the end to put food in with me until I came out, when they got me from Wood Green (my former humans emigrated to Australia). But that was less than a day, and then sitting by the fire won . . .

Also, whooo, drama! Glad poor Mystery is okay but oof, what an ordeal. Reminds me of the night Melissa moved in and the VERY FIRST THING old Stinkerbelle did was walk straight into the ONE glue trap I hadn't been able to find and remove, so she and I spent six hours that first night removing glue from an old, cranky, fragile longhaired cat. I hope that's it for cat-related drama and you can get on with the petting and purring and inability to resist the encroachment of LOLspeak into your brain.

Mystery and Milo differ from most other cats in that their grammar and syntax are excellent, so I'm fairly sure that LOLism isn't a risk in this case...
