This is great! I've always enjoyed the bits of fake-science in SF novels ('yes, but there could be sine-waves along the vectors'). This passage from Greg Bear's Eon, which I was reading recently, made me laugh (it's the 'of course' that makes it a classic):

Patrica, somewhat to her surprise, understood the principle immediately. 'Of course!' she said. 'It's like touching the square root of space-time. Try to enter the singularity, and you translate yourself through a distance along some spatial co-ordinates.'
